The original Mill was built between 1717 and 1721 by industrialist John Lombe to house his Italian-inspired machinery, which he used to create thread from silk fibres. The foundations of the Mill still exist and the building is recognised as the first factory in the world, the launch pad for the Industrial Revolution and a gateway to the Derwent Valley UNESCO World Heritage Site.

Q: Who can apply?

A: Anyone! Are you a doer, maker, scientist, tech wizard, museum lover or something completely different? Do you know of others who might be interested? Apply via this link here and pass it on >

Q: Why should I apply?

A: To meet new people. Do different things. Have fun and be free with your ideas. You are remixing a museum yes, but enjoy meeting new people and eating cake (cake is a big thing at MMUK HQ). You are discovering a new place too. To find out more about our 2014 venue at Derby Silk Mill click here >

Q: Who can I ask about MuseomixUK? Who did it last year? Can they describe their experiences?

A: Yes! This year you are not alone. You’ll be joining an alumni of people who dipped their toes in last year and took the big plunge. MMUK took place at Enginuity, Ironbridge Gorge Museums and had never been done before in the UK until 2013! Find out more about the prototypes created last year here > Tweet us a question @museomixUK, Facebook us at MuseomixUK (we’ve got a group, join it!), email us at we are all on hand to help!

Q: Derby is a long way from me and I don’t know where I will be able to stay, can anyone help me?

A: Yes! We will be providing information on hotels, travel routes and folk who will meet and greet you after we have finalised participants. For the mean time. If you’ve got a question use FB, Twitter and Gmail to ask us any questions you may have.

Q: Will it cost anything?

A: Yes. The cost is set at £50 per participant, (even the organization team will pay this amount too) to cover costs of the three days i.e. food, resources etc. If you are selected to participate you yourself have to cover the expense of travel and accommodation. We at Museomix will do our best to help you with travel arrangements and suggested accommodation.

Q. Do I need to have an idea of what to ‘mix’?

A: No. At the start of the event everyone will have an opportunity to tour the venue and consider ideas of what they would like to see. An opportunity to pitch ideas will determine which projects are worked on.

Q. Should I bring any equipment?

A: if you have any spare technology you would be happy for others to use over the weekend, bring it with you and you never know how it could be used. You will be able to take it home with you. A lab with high and low tech will be available, but you never know when a spare HDMI cable comes in handy!

Q: What skills are needed?

A: Everything and anything. Projects are decided on the first day and previous projects have included on coding, photography, animation, graphic design, sound recording, build, press, marketing and website content. Along with social media and planning skills. Anyone who is curious about mixing, keen to learn and work in a team can make a contribution.
